Abstract
In the past, H was considered as a basic field in electromagnetism and B as a derived quantity. In modern times the inverse situation prevai ls. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these possibilities and we develop for Maxwell's equations a manifestly covariant formali sm using E and H as primary fields and D and B as derived quantities.
