Abstract
This Paper describes the strengthening of two concrete natural draught cooling towers at Ironbridge Power Station. Brief details are given o f the investigations and assessment of the towers which lead to the re quirement for strengthening, Details are given of site investigation, mini-pile foundation strengthening, column jacking and the use of pigm ented fly ash concrete for cast in-situ mantles. The design of the fou ndation strengthening and in-situ mantle are described, The constructi on of external mantles around the existing shells made use of a climbi ng rig access system and included the pumping of concrete to heights o f 110 m.
