The effects of water interaction with UO2 single crystals (leaching) w
ere studied by means of 7.53 MeV He-4-ion channeling. Upon leaching at
temperatures above 150 degrees C transformation of the surface layer
into a higher oxide, namely beta-U3O7, was observed. The lattice misma
tch between the bulk crystal and the transformed layer produced import
ant changes in the (110) axial channeling direction. Based on these da
ta and Monte Carlo channeling simulations a model structure of the tra
nsformed layer was developed.
