Et. Akintayo, STUDIES IN THE SYNTHESIS OF OIL MODIFIED ALKYD RESIN USING CRUDE SOYBEAN OIL AS MODIFIER, Discovery and innovation, 8(2), 1996, pp. 165-169
Two categories of alkyd resins, the short and medium oil alkyd resins,
were prepared by alcoholysis method using crude soybean oil as alkyd
modifier. Progress of the reaction was monitored by determining change
s in acid value of the whole reaction mixture with time. Results showe
d that acid value decreased with increase in reactor time for both cat
egories. Rate of decrease was more rapid for early stages of the synth
esis and the decrease was more rapid for medium oil alkyd than for sho
rt oil alkyd. Alkyd yield of the two categories of resin was estimated
from the calculated rate constant. Medium oil alkyd has higher yield
with rate constant of k=3.21g (mole COOH)(-1 min) compared to that of
short oil alkyd with rate constant of k = 2.22g (mole COOH)(-1). Gelat
ion period was 60 min and 90 min for medium oil alkyd and short oil al
kyd respectively.
