Using a simple analysis technique applied to photomicrographic darn, t
he size and profile of highly, diffuse dye cloud structures in a colou
r negative photographic material have been determined. The size and pr
ofile of individual clouds were also calculated from modulation transf
er function (MTF) and noise power spectrum (NPS) measurements. In the
ease of NPS, modifications to an existing theory had to be made in ord
er to allow for the kinds of cloud structure encountered with extreme
levels of dye diffusion. The results obtained from MTF, NPS and photom
icrographic data were found to correlate reasonably well.
