REVISION OF THE LOESS STRATOTYPE OF KESSE LT (LIMBOURG, BELGIUM)

For forty years, the section of Kesselt has been considered as the Wei chselian stratotype of eastern Middle Belgium. The recent advance of t he quarry displays, interbedded at mid-height of the section, an inter glacial paleosol overlain by a humic horizon containing reworked ash o f an early Weichselian tephra. This finding allows us to displace the underlying series of loess and paleosols from Weichselian to Middle Pl eistocene and modifies the chronostratigraphic interpretation of the l ower half of the Kesselt stratotype.
