Bd. Oomah et al., COMPARISON OF FLAXSEED MEAL LIPIDS EXTRACTED WITH DIFFERENT SOLVENTS, Lebensmittel-Wissenschaft + Technologie, 29(7), 1996, pp. 654-658
The quality and composition of lipids extracted from a commercial flax
seed meal using methanol, aqueous methanol and aqueous methanol-ammoni
a as primary solvents were investigated. Separation and quantification
of individual lipid classes were performed by utilizing thin-layer ch
romatography with flame ionization detector. Aqueous methanol-ammonia
extracted the least amount of lipid in the meal. Methanol preferential
ly extracted polar lipids and monoglycerides. The composition of lipid
extracted with aqueous methanol-ammonia was altered only when hexane
was used as the secondary solvent. Distribution of the fatty acids of
total and polar lipids, triglyceride, wax and sterol ester fraction of
lipids was affected by aqueous methanol-ammonia-hexane solvent extrac
tion. (C) 1996 Academic Press Limited
