The aim of our study was to gain a precise sonographic view of the abd
ominal anatomy, especially for beginners. Therefore, we performed a sy
stematic study of the sectional anatomy of the abdomen. With this vide
otape we tried to show a close correlation of ultrasound images with t
he anatomical sections. We made 4-mm thin, longitudinal, frontal and t
ransversal sections of the abdomen using the plastination technique. W
ith this technique it was possible to preserve the original topographi
c relationship between the organs. With the help of a photomontage tec
hnique we reproduced the two-dimensional pictures on the surface of th
e human body in order to lead to a topographical orientation. Based on
this first step all standard ultrasound images and tapes were compare
d to the anatomical sections and discussed with reference to the speci
al anatomical and sonographic characteristics of each organ, tissue or
vascular structure.
