Abstract
A Eu3+ complex with a novel macrobicyclic ligand incorporating a tetra lactam ring and a 2,2'-bipyridine chromophoric unit was synthesized an d its photophysical properties were studied. This complex displays exc ellent luminescent characteristics in water solution which may be rela ted to the very efficient encapsulation of the complexed Eu3+ ion by t he tetralactam moiety In contrast with literature data, introduction o f N-oxide group to the bipyridine chromophore lowers the luminescence properties of the cryptate.
