Long-lasting stimulation by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) due to
pituitary adenoma may cause nodular enlargement in the adrenal cortex.
This nodule may function autonomously and cause ACTH-independent Gush
ing's syndrome. We present two cases of recurrent Gushing's syndrome f
ollowing successful pituitary microadenectomy (with positive histopath
ology and postoperative decrease of ACTH). Both were treated with bila
teral adrenalectomy and histopathology revealed macronodular adrenal h
yperplasia. Gushing's syndrome was cured after bilateral adrenalectomy
in both patients.
