Thirty of 72 patients with acute pancreatitis required primary intensi
ve care on surgical admission. The underlying cause of severe pancreat
itis was found to be biliary in 39 patients (eight required ICU), alco
hol toxicity in 30 (20 on ICU), and unknown in three patients (two on
ICU). All patients treated on the intensive care unit (ICU) were class
ified according to APACHE-II-sepsis score, Ranson criteria, the Mainze
r clinical-and the Heidelberger CT-criterias. The average APACHE-II-sc
ore of these patients revealed ten points, in patients requiring contr
olled ventilation 16, and in deceased patients 20 points. Complication
s such as alcohol withdrawal (16), pneumonia (10), hepatic failure (8)
, pulmonary failure (7), renal failure (8) occurred during the treatme
nt. Clinical and technical findings were analyzed for their prognostic
value in the course of severe pancreatitis and compared to the litera
ture.
