By means of a definite heat treatment magnetite crystals were formed d
ispersed in a silicate glass, which initially contains Fe2O3 as a glas
s component. The specific saturation magnetization of the glass cerami
c manufactured turns out to be dependent on the heat treatment conditi
ons and shows a significant maximum for a certain temperature and trea
tment duration. Small angle X-ray scattering, transmission electron mi
croscopy, and X-ray diffraction were used to obtain structural paramet
ers. The correlations between size and packing density of the magnetit
e crystals and the magnetic properties are discussed.
