Abstract
A method for the direct measurement of the interface tension of precip itating silver halide in a photochromic glass melt is presented. The t echnique is based on the determination of the mean radii of curvature of a glass droplet swimming in the silver halide melt at temperatures above the glass transition temperature. The calculation of the interfa ce tension is performed by means of the Laplace equation taking into a ccount the gravitational force and the force of buoyancy. The results obtained for 610 degrees C and 850 degrees C are used to estimate the nucleation rates for the formation of silver halide phases in photochr omic glasses.
