Abstract
Osteoporosis has now been recognised by both the World Health Organiza
tion and the UK Department of Health as a major public health problem.
It causes more than 200,000 fractures each year in the UK -- at an es
timated cost to the NHS of pound 750 million. For the individual, it p
resents a burden of pain, deformity and premature death.
