Abstract
Genetic studies with Drosophila identified what appeared to be a linea r signalling cassette connecting extracellular signals to nuclear resp onses, But the discovery of a substrate for the Sevenless receptor ind icates that the concept of a single, linear pathway may be an oversimp lification.
