An analysis of the induced bulk second-order nonlinear polarization as
a function of crystallographic orientation for the III-V compound sem
iconductors is presented. It is shown that for the {11l} family of pla
nes, the largest nonlinear polarization that could act as a source for
the generation of second-harmonic fields is for structures prepared o
n the (112) surface. The input fundamental fields that interact nonlin
early in the media considered here are transverse electric ors-polariz
ed with respect to the ((1) over bar 10) surface - which is an orthogo
nal natural cleavage plane for the (112) surface.
