PHASE INDEPENDENCE OF PITCH PRODUCED BY NARROW-BAND SOUNDS

Three listeners matched the pitch of a simple tone to that of narrow-b and complex signals having different phases. The pitch matches were in dependent of the phases; the frequency of the simple tone approximatel y equaled the center of gravity of the power spectrum of each complex signal. This result is inconsistent with a model that calculates the p itch of a waveform as the average of instantaneous frequency weighted by the envelope of the waveform.
