Vv. Lunin et An. Kharlanov, ROLE OF SOLID-STATE INTERACTIONS IN THE GENESIS OF ACID-BASE PROPERTIES OF THE Y2O3-ZRO2 SURFACE, Kinetics and catalysis, 37(5), 1996, pp. 645-650
Acid-base properties of the surface of zirconia and zirconia modified
with yttria are studied by diffuse-reflectance IR spectroscopy. Yttriu
m cations supported on the ZrO2 surface by impregnation are shown to m
igrate in the bulk. As a result, the tetragonal modification of zircon
ia is formed in the subsurface layer. The concentration of Lewis acid
sites on the surface of the modified ZrO2 system declines with increas
ing yttria content. Simultaneously, electron-donor adsorption centers
are formed.
