Abstract
New Zealand, with its short history, has a proud record in the develop ment of radiation oncology. The first independent department of radiot herapy was formed in Dunedin in 1931, and the first clinical physicist was appointed in Wellington in 1933, Prominent research workers inclu de the radiobiologist Dr, John Read and the physicist Sir Ernest Ruthe rford.
