It has been shown that the occurrence of at least one Ph(Me)C(OH)- moi
ety and two phenyl substituents (R(1) = R(2) = Ph) is necessary to obt
ain linear bis-butatriene from an acetylenic gamma-glycol of the R(1)R
(2)C(OH)C=CC(OH) (Me)Ph type. The introduction of a t-Bu group (R(1),
R(2) = Ph or R(1) = R(2) = t-Bu) diminishes possibility of dimerizatio
n of the intermediate compounds and causes formation of acetylenic ket
ols. The structure of the compounds studied was determined spectrally,
among others by comparison with C-13 NMR spectra recorded for fourtee
n acetylenic 1,4-diols.
