Abstract
We present the very first long-wavelength vertical-cavity laser (VCL) multimode transmission experiments. These lasers are ideal for local a rea networks. The VCL's were double-fused and operated continuous-wave at 1.54 mu m at room-temperature. Data rates of 155 Mb/s were transmi tted over 1 km on a multimode fiber with bit-error rates less than 10( -10) for VCL's with diameters of 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, and 26 mu m. The R C-limited bandwidths were typically 2-3 GHz for these VCL's. The yield of the devices was higher than 90%.
