TRANSLATION OF USERS QOS REQUIREMENTS INTO ATM PERFORMANCE PARAMETERSIN B-ISDN

This paper studies the Quality of Service (QoS) concept in B-ISDN (Bro adband Integrated Services Digital Network). The main goal of this pap er is to motivate the translation concept in broadband network and to present the translation of QoS parameters between layers. As an exampl e, we concentrate on the translation from the AAL (ATM Adaptation Laye r) to the ATM layer, as the AAL must be designed to be service depende nt and specific. The QoS parameters in the ATM layer and AAL are defin ed in this paper. The QoS parameters at the ATM layer resulting from t he translation will be the performance requirements on a connection ba sis for the ATM network. Finally, we discuss the impacts of QoS parame ter translation on guaranteeing QoS in the ATM network.
