Abstract
A systematic study is made of embedding class 2 vacuum spacetimes for which the Petrov type is either D or N. It is shown that embedding cla ss 2 can only occur (i) in Petrov type D for the Ehlers-Kundt classes A and B and (ii) in Petrov type N for the pp-waves and a subfamily of the Cahen-Spelkens metrics.
