A simple chemical etching technique is presented to fabricate optical
fiber tips of 15-20-nm diameter for use as a probe for a photon scanni
ng tunneling microscope. With the use of a single-step process, conven
tional multimode fiber is etched in an unbuffered HF acid solution. Th
e cone angle of the fabricated tips can be varied from 4 degrees to 14
degrees by adjusting the temperature and the concentration of the aci
