This paper describes the design of a digital signal processor based sy
stem for a personal computer for EMG data acquisition to monitor muscl
e activity during gait and to estimate the power spectrum of the acqui
red data under normal and pathological conditions. It also gives the h
ardware details of the velocity meter which is used to monitor the mus
cle activity with speed of walking. Software has been developed for sy
stem initialization, data acquisition, processing of acquired data, an
d data display for five channels. The developed equipment will be usef
ul to clinicians for enhancing the understanding of a patient's dynami
