Abstract
Numerical experimentation is used to examine the onset of axisymmetric vortex breakdown in a completely closed, cylindrical environment. Mod ification of the boundary motion allows one to compute a state of inci pient vortex breakdown. The numerically determined states are used to test a recently posed hypothesis for the occurrence of vortex breakdow n. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.
