The generation of a femptosecond second harmonic in a bacteriorhodopsi
n solution is investigated. It is shown that the behavior of the harmo
nic can be explained by the coherent interference of several contribut
ions from three- and five-wave mixing processes (chi((2)) and chi((4))
). The magnitude and phase of the fourth-order electronic susceptibili
ty chi((4)) of the medium with respect to chi((2)) determined. (C) 199
