Experimental results on the pressure broadening of NO2 for collisions
with the noble gases He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe are presented. The broaden
ing coefficients of six lines in the nu(3) band near 1616.85 cm(-1) wi
th quantum numbers 2 less than or equal to N '' less than or equal to
44, 1 less than or equal to K-a '' less than or equal to 5, and of sev
en lines in the nu(2) + nu(3) - nu(2) band with 29 less than or equal
to N '' less than or equal to 36, 0 less than or equal to K-a '' less
than or equal to 5, and of one line from the 2 nu(2) band with N '' =
38, K-a '' = 5 are measured using a tunable diode laser spectrometer.
The experimental values for lines with smaller N '' for the nu(3) band
extend previous experimental data to analyze the dependence of the br
oadening coefficients on the quantum numbers N '' and K-a ''. Summariz
ing the available experimental data one can state that for collisions
with helium, neon, and argon neither a clear N '' nor a K-a '' depende
nce is observable. For the krypton and xenon broadening coefficient a
weak decrease with increasing N '' was found. Due to the restricted qu
antum number range of lines in the hot band and the overtone band the
quantum number dependence could not be discussed. The range of values
for the present measurements is consistent with previous measurements
on the nu(3) fundamental band. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
