Sj. Cunningham et al., DYSMORPHOPHOBIA - RECENT DEVELOPMENTS OF INTEREST TO THE MAXILLOFACIAL SURGEON, British journal of oral & maxillofacial surgery, 34(5), 1996, pp. 368-374
Recent changes in the classification of psychiatric illnesses have res
ulted in the term dysmorphophobia being replaced by that of body dysmo
rphic disorder (BDD). This paper attempts to alert the clinician to th
e presenting features of the condition and discusses its management, w
ith particular emphasis on the role of surgery and current concepts of
pharmacological treatment. A number of case reports are included to i
llustrate the diversity of this interesting disorder and the difficult
ies involved in treatment.
