Abstract
We propose and study a new criterion based on the vorticity field prop erties, in order to define and characterize more precisely vortices (o rganized structures) in two-dimensional incompressible flows. This cri terion is compared with the Weiss criterion. Analytical derivations an d numerical studies bring more insight into dissipation processes and axisymmetrixation of elliptical vortex structures.
