EVALUATION OF DISPOSAL ALTERNATIVES FOR BLEACH PLANT CONCENTRATES FROM CLOSED-CYCLE SYSTEMS

The treatment of effluent concentrates, which contain chlorinated orga nics, will be a key component of closed cycle systems for bleached pul p mills. Potential concentrate treatment processes were reviewed consi dering technical and environmental acceptability. Equilibrium calculat ions were performed to estimate the impact of chemical composition and treatment conditions on potential pollutant emissions. Several proces ses were selected for further investigation, which will include labora tory and pilot plant testing with concentrations from pilot scale evap oration studies.
