Dogs and cats with uremia may display abnormalities of essentially all
parts of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Abnormalities may be mild o
r severe. They may result from inflammation, edema, erosions, ulcerati
on, and/or necrosis. Clinical signs of GI complications or uremia may
include anorexia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and GI b
leeding. This article discusses the GI manifestations of uremia accord
ing to anatomic sites and also describes the management of common clin
ical problems as they relate to uremic GI abnormalities.
