A survey of literature reports, concerning the activity of water-solub
le enzymes entrapped inside liposomes, demonstrates the general feasib
ility of liposomes as enzyme-containing submicrometer-sized reactors.
Although systematic studies are missing, the investigation of the cata
lytic properties of enzyme-containing liposomes is generally restricte
d to systems with small, uncharged substrates for which the lipid bila
yer of the liposomes is permeable. So far, only a few attempts have be
en undertaken to decrease this permeability barrier.
