Exogenus 17 beta-hydroxy-17 alpha-methyl-androsta-1,4-dien- and andros
ta-1,4-diene-3.17-dione are biotransformed by the green alga T76 Scene
desmus quadricauda. The bioproducts have been isolated by chromatograp
hic processes and identified on the basis of their spectroscopic featu
res. Hydration of the Delta(4) double bond may justify the presence of
the epimeric 5-hydroxyderivatives while rather complex skeleton rearr
angements are involved in the formation of the remaining products. Cop
