A patient with Aspergillus endocarditis, myocarditis and pericarditis
is described. A 55-year-old man developed necrotizing fasciitis of the
lower abdominal wall, pelvis and right thigh. Despite aggressive surg
ical debridement and antibiotic coverage, the patient died of multisys
tem organ failure. Autopsy revealed Aspergillus thromboulcerative endo
carditis, myocarditis and pericarditis, acute necrotizing fungal bronc
hopneumonia and mycotic dissemination to brain, kidney and thyroid gla
nd. A review of the literature showed that in the absence of open-hear
t surgery Aspergillus endocarditis and myocarditis are very uncommon.
