Abstract
Light possessing orbital angular momentum is believed to exert a torqu e on atomic particles during resonant interactions. In this paper we s uggest that trapped ions may be used to measure this effect. We presen t the results of simulations of trapped ions interacting with a Laguer re-Gaussian laser beam, and discuss the practical considerations of do ing such an experiment.
