Bd. Becker et al., A SIMULATED FUTURE ATMOSPHERIC OBSERVATION DATABASE INCLUDING ATOVS, ASCAT, AND DWL, Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 77(10), 1996, pp. 2279-2294
A database for study of the impact of Doppler wind lidar data on numer
ical weather prediction in Observation System Simulation Experiments w
as created. Five Doppler wind lidar scenarios, TIROS Operational Verti
cal Sounder, Advanced TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder, Advanced Sca
tterometer, and all conventional observation types with a realistic di
stribution in time and space have been successfully simulated. A 30-da
y run of the ECMWF forecast model was used as a physically sound refer
ence state. This ''true'' atmospheric state was sampled at the observa
tion positions and times. The simulated true variables were mapped ont
o the ''measured'' variables, and a mix of random and gross errors wit
h realistic statistical characteristics was added. The simulated obser
vations were validated by comparison with existing data where availabl
