Background: A psychological profile of the average bariatric patient d
emonstrates psychopathology that may contribute to patient noncomplian
ce with postsurgical treatment guidelines. Methods and results: Patien
t psychopathology is analysed with regard to noncompliance and its con
tribution to poor surgical outcome. The interpersonal process approach
is reviewed as a psychotherapeutic framework that provides interventi
ons to patient psychopathology. Conclusions: Treatment of patient psyc
hopathology with the interpersonal process approach encourages postsur
gical compliance and helps patients succeed.
