Abstract
The Cauchy problem and initial traces for the doubly degenerate parabo lic equations u(t) = div(\Du(m)\(p-2)Du(m)) are studied. Under certain growth condition on the initial datum u(0)(x) as \x\ --> infinity, th e existence of solution is proved. The results obtained are optimal in the class of nonnegative locally bounded solution, for which a Harnac k-type inequality holds.
