DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY - ORIGINS AND PROSP ECTS

Following an initial phase of descriptive and experimental studies at the cellular level, developmental biology has now entered the molecula r era. The discovery of developmental regulatory genes proceeded to a great extent from mutation studies in the Drosophila fruitfly. Many of these genes were found to be highly conserved through evolution, thus enabling to decipher the mechanisms underlying vertebrate development .
