Activities of the Health Care Financing Administration in evaluating q
uality/performance of care in five major areas of medical services are
reviewed. The goal in all areas is to improve rather than police perf
ormance. Specific attention is given to Health Care Financing Administ
ration projects in myocardial infarction and nursing-home care. Future
prospects are discussed for continued focus on institutions and syste
ms, Health Care Financing Administration payment practices, increased
focus on risk-adjusted outcomes, and publication of data.
