Continuing our study on lipids present in the myelin upon oxygen defic
iency, we identified 3 beta-hydroxysterols appearing in trace amounts
in the cerebral white matter of rats. Using a combination of gas chrom
atography and mass spectrometry, the isomers of cholesterol and lanost
erol as well as 24-methylcholesterol and 24-methyldesmosterol were ide
ntified to be the trace components of total lipid fraction extracted f
rom the myelin of rats.
