Dicopper(II) dilanthanum pentaoxide, La2Cu2O5, has been prepared using
a high-pressure technique. Its structure at 296 and 10 K was analysed
by Rietveld refinements using neutron powder diffraction data. The st
ructure of La2Cu2O5 comprises CuO5 square pyramids connected to each o
ther in three dimensions by corner sharing and ten-coordinate La3+ ion
s occupying positions next to oxygen vacancies which form tunnels alon
g the c axis.
