The title compound, [SnCl(C7H7O2S)(3)], crystallizes in an unusual spa
ce group for Ar3SnCl compounds, namely, Pna2(1). The structure has [-O
=S(CH3)(O)C6H4(Ar)(2)Sn(Cl)-](n) polymer chains zigzagging along the s
crew axis parallel to c, which are then closely packed to create a den
se structure, unlike the open lattice found for the tert-butyl analogu
e. The molecular unit has distorted C-s symmetry, with one aryl group
forming the pseudo-mirror plane. The environment around the Sn atom is
quasi-five-coordinate, compared with that found in either four-coordi
nate monomeric Ph(3)SnCl or in five-coordinate Ph(3)SnCl.L.
