M. Venner et E. Deegen, INTERPRETATION OF ANTIBODY-TITERS AGAINST BORRELIA-BURGDORFERI IN THEHORSE CONSIDERING THE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT IT IN THE HUMAN-BEING - OVERVIEW, Pferdeheilkunde, 12(6), 1996, pp. 865-873
Lyme borreliosis is a zoonosis whose pathologic agent -Borrelia Burgdo
rferi- is a bacteria from the Spirochets family. The borrelia is trans
mitted by ticks. In human beings borreliosis can lead to skin lesions,
arthritis, cardiac diseases, ophtalmological lesions and encephalomye
litis. High serological liters are a sign that there has been contact
between the patient and Borrelia Burgdorferi. For interpretation of th
e titer, typical clinical signs should always be considered, as health
y people often have positive titers. Borrelia Burgdorferi can be patho
gen for dogs as well and can cause symptoms similar to those of human
beings. High titers can also be found in horses. Though it has not yet
been proved, that Borrelia Burgdorferi can cause clinical symptoms in
an infected horse. Even if horses are frequently in contact with tick
s, harbour the pathological agent and produce antibodies, only sporadi
c cases have been reported where an equine borreliosis could possibly
be suspected. On the other hand, positive titers are often found in ho
rses without clinical symptoms.
