Ds. Malley et al., TREATMENT OF BILATERAL CYTOMEGALOVIRUS RETINITIS WITH SUSTAINED-RELEASE GANCICLOVIR IMPLANTS IN A CHILD, American journal of ophthalmology, 122(5), 1996, pp. 731-732
PURPOSE: To report treatment of bilateral cytomegalovirus (CMV) retini
tis in an 11-year-old girl with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AI
DS). METHOD: Case report describing the use of intravitreal ganciclovi
r sustained-release devices to treat CMV retinitis, involving zones 1
through 3, which progressed despite single and combination intravenous
therapy with ganciclovir and foscarnet. RESULTS: Stabilization with n
o active CMV retinitis was achieved after bilateral implantation of in
travitreal sustained-release ganciclovir devices. There was no reactiv
ation of the retinitis during the 5 months of follow-up. CONCLUSION: S
ustained-release ganciclovir implants can be used to achieve local con
trol of CMV retinitis in the pediatric patient.
