The recently developed 1 h fluorescent test with Daphnia magna was fur
ther evaluated. The assay is based on the in vivo observation of enzym
atic activity using a fluorogenic substrate that, after cleavage by th
e corresponding enzyme, releases a fluorescent dye. Influences interfe
ring with the test evaluation were determined and eliminated. It was i
nvestigated as to whether new fluorescent tests can be developed for C
eriodaphnia dubia and Hyalella azteca. Also, other fluorescent substra
tes were tested for their applicability as fluorogenic substrate in co
mbination with D. magna, C. dubia, and H. azteca. (C) 1996 by John Wil
