Abstract
Heterogeneity of biological structure and function is an impediment to the analysis and treatment of human solid tumours. Its importance is frequently underestimated in clinico-pathological research. This artic le reviews the many facets of heterogeneity in tumour systems, and its importance to the interpretation of tumour biology.
