H. Feencalligan et M. Sandsgoldstein, PICTURE OF OUR BEGINNINGS - THE ARTWORK OF ART-THERAPY PIONEERS, American journal of art therapy, 35(2), 1996, pp. 43-59
Fifteen art therapy pioneers responded in 1994 to a questionnaire abou
t their art therapy work. Memories of childhood art experiences, favor
ite artists and works of art, preferred media, and descriptions of per
sonal artwork appear in the first half of the article. The second half
of the article focuses on professional concerns about the relationshi
p between artmaking and art therapy careers. Topics include: balancing
artmaking and an art therapy practice; the relationship between art t
herapy work and personal artwork; the role of art in art therapy; and
advice to students. The authors sought to augment the history of art t
herapy and to encourage reflection upon the art in art therapy in ligh
t of certification and licensure requirements.
