Abstract
The first whisky lactone precursors, (3S,4S)-3-methyl-4-hydroxyoctanoi c acid 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside and its 6'-O-gallate, were isolated from the wood of Platycarya strobilacea, together with 10 known tannin s and related compounds. Their structures were determined on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical evidence.
